Write to your leaders for a forever chemicals ban!
Please write an email to the European Commission and your national environment minister, who will be discussing chemicals action next week. We have left the email box to the right blank for you to write a convincing message to your representative. Below are some suggested talking points and some tips:
Talking points for your email:
- Start your email with Dear Commissioners and Minister for Environment,
- Explain why you care about the European Union taking action to protect our health and environment from toxic chemicals.
- Explain how you are seeing the forever chemicals scandal unfolding in your country and why you don’t want our leaders to listen to chemical companies.
- Ask the Commissioners and Environment Ministers to take the following action:
- Ahead of next week’s EU Council meeting:
1. Strengthen the chemicals control system (REACH) to better protect our health and environment.
2. Prevent further forever chemicals-like scandals from happening by speeding up bans, in particular of the most harmful chemicals in everyday products.
3.Make polluters pay for the damage they cause.
- Beyond next week’s EU Council meeting: Address forever chemicals pollution by
1. Providing health and financial support to communities who have been most affected by forever chemical pollution,
2. Making a swift and efficient plan for decontaminating soil and water from forever chemicals, which are also polluting our food and drinking water;
3. Making polluters pay for the immense cost of PFAS pollution, to not put the burden on innocent citizens or the taxpayers’ money
- Make sure to thank them in advance and sign off with your name and country of residence
Tips:
- Be personal: Share why you care and what your hopes are for Europe’s environment and European health. Personal stories are always more impactful.
- Keep it polite: Decision makers are much more likely to respond to a friendly message — let them know just how much support they have to stand up to powerful companies.
- Ask for a commitment: Directly ask the Commissioners and Environment Ministers to take action to strengthen the rules on chemicals (REACH) and make sure forever chemicals-like scandals won’t happen anymore. Make sure your leaders know what you want them to do in your name.
- Ask for a response: Make it clear that you’d like them to consider your message.
