No nuclear weapons on Swedish territory!
To the Swedish Parliament and Government
Petition
The decision on NATO has already been made, regardless of what we think about it. But an important decision remains to be made.
All other Nordic countries are in NATO and have actively chosen not to have nuclear weapons stationed on their territory.
In Sweden, that choice has not been made yet. Your voice is important and needed now. Sign the petition and demand written guarantees that nuclear weapons will not be placed on Swedish territory!
Why is this important?
Nuclear weapons are weapons of mass destruction that cause extreme suffering and catastrophic humanitarian crises. Nuclear weapons do not create security, but are a constant threat to humanity. Having nuclear weapons on its territory only helps to escalate tensions on a global level. Sweden risks becoming the only country in the Nordics that does not have a written policy or law against nuclear weapons.
Today, both Swedish politicians and NATO representatives say that there is no reason to deploy nuclear weapons on Swedish territory. But according to an unequivocal opinion poll, the majority of the Swedish people believe that it is insufficient. Our opinion poll from the end of December 2023 shows that two thirds of Sweden's population think that nuclear weapons should not be placed in Sweden and that the Riksdag should write a policy that excludes this.
Finland, Norway and Iceland are members of NATO but have actively chosen not to have nuclear weapons stationed on their territory through legislation and written policy. In addition, Denmark has clearly written such a prohibition into its defense cooperation agreement with the United States. The Kristersson government has repeatedly said that it intends to follow the Nordic examples, but still does not include a nuclear weapons ban in the defense cooperation agreement or any independent written policy.
A frightening example of how it can go is from Belgium in the 60s where the foreign minister assured the parliament that the government would never allow the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belgium in connection with a new law being passed to enter into bilateral agreements without the participation of the parliament. Shortly thereafter, the government entered into an agreement with the United States to deploy nuclear weapons on Belgian territory in 1962. Those nuclear weapons remain in Belgium to this day. Such action is unforgivable and we want to ensure that something similar cannot happen in Sweden.
