Petition
We want the Italian and European authorities to immediately release Maysoon Majidi, drop all charges against her, provide her with necessary medical and psychological support, grant her refugee status, and ensure fair treatment for all refugees and asylum seekers in the future.
Why is this important?
Our colleague, Maysoon Majidi, fled the fascist Islamist regime in Iran to the Kurdish Autonomous Region, fearing for her life. Unfortunately, she was not spared there either, facing continued persecution and threats. Desperate for safety, she decided to seek refuge in Europe, hoping to find asylum in a democratic country.
Her journey led her to Istanbul, where she had to stay illegally for several months before finding a smuggler who could take her and other refugees to Italy. Upon arrival in Crotone, Italy, she was arrested by the police along with other refugees. While everyone else was released, Maysoon remains unjustly imprisoned. For six long months, Maysoon has been locked up, innocent and desperate.
Maysoon has sought refuge to escape the Iranian Islamist regime, only to be arrested in Europe. She is accused of being involved in human trafficking, a charge based on the dubious statements of two witnesses who were on the boat with her. These two witnesses have denied these accusations, affirming that Maysoon is herself a refugee, not a trafficker. Her situation is dire – in protest against her wrongful imprisonment, she has gone on a hunger strike. She now weighs only 38 kg (84 lbs) at a height of 165 cm (5'5"). Her physical and mental health are deteriorating rapidly.
We urgently call for the immediate release of Maysoon Majidi and urge the Italian authorities, including:
- President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella
- Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni
- Minister of Interior, Matteo Piantedosi
- Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio
- Governor of Calabria, Roberto Occhiuto
- Court of Crotone
- Prosecutor's Office of Crotone
and the European authorities, including:
- Members of the European Parliament
- European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson
- European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders
to end this grave injustice. Maysoon deserves freedom and protection, not imprisonment and despair.
