EU, stop buying Russian oil and funding the war

We are calling on the EU and Member states to:
- Urgently adopt measures to curb Russia's shadow fleet and sanction every single ship in this fleet.
- Address the massive environmental risk posed by old shadow fleet tankers operating in EU waters.
- Close loopholes and step up the enforcement of sanctions on Russian fossil fuels.
Why is this important?
Russia’s shadow fleet is smuggling oil to fund Putin’s war on Ukraine and risks causing catastrophic oil spills in European waters. One of these aging, unsafe secret ships is even suspected of cutting a vital power cable in the Baltic Sea. [1]
This secret fleet is critical for Russia’s war machine. Yet, only one-third of these ships face sanctions. [2] To stop Putin’s aggression, the EU must act now and sanction every single ship.
Poland is now leading the EU Presidency. The country has pledged to counter Russian influence and eliminate dependence on Russian energy — so we have a unique opportunity to push for stronger sanctions. It’s time for the EU to step up, dismantle this shadow fleet to cut war funding and protect our coasts from ecological disasters.
Right now, the EU is preparing its 16th sanctions package to mark the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Let’s make sure this package sanctions every single one of Russia’s shadow fleet.
