Protect Europe's wolves!

To the European Commission and the Member States of the European Union.
Petition
The European Commission’s plan to downgrade the protection status of the wolf puts the profits of hunters and farmers before science. Wolves are vital to healthy ecosystems and remain endangered in many regions.
The decision is already under review by the European Court of Justice.
We demand that:
- The EU stops its plan to downgrade the wolf’s protection, and instead reinstates and strengthens its status under the Habitats Directive.
- EU Member States block the downgrade in their national legislation, as they are under no legal obligation to comply.
Wolves belong in Europe. This attack on biodiversity must stop.
Why is this important?
Wolves are in danger.
These magnificent creatures play a vital role in our ecosystems: they balance prey populations, supporting biodiversity and restoring natural landscapes. [1] But fear of the “big bad wolf” means many wolf populations remain endangered.
Now the EU has given in to lobbying from hunters and farmers and is trying to weaken their protected status. The scientific and legal basis for this decision is so shaky that several cases are already pending at the European Court of Justice. [2] Environmental groups have condemned the move. [3]
But we can still stop this. Member States are not required to implement the EU’s decision. They have until 2027 and can reject it entirely. Belgium, Poland, and the Czech Republic have already chosen to keep strong protections for wolves. Others can – and must – do the same. [4]
This isn’t just about wolves. It’s about science, upholding hard-won conservation laws, and helping nature to thrive. The EU’s own data shows that wolf predation affects just 0.07% of livestock, and these losses are already covered by public subsidies. EU law clearly states that conservation policy must be guided by ecological science — not economic arguments. [5]
Will you sign the petition to demand the EU and its member states protect, not punish, our wildlife? Together, let’s expose that EU leaders are putting short-term profits ahead of ecology and the law. Together, let’s howl to protect our wolves.
