End the Plastic Era!

To the Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience, and a Competitive Circular Economy, Jessika Roswall, the Directorate-General for the Environment (DG ENV), ant the Council of the EU.
Petition
We demand the EU hold the line and push for a rapid, transparent and strong Global Plastics Treaty — one that includes:
- Binding caps on virgin plastic production worldwide.
- Mandatory global targets — not voluntary pledges.
- Regulation of the full lifecycle of plastics, from design to disposal.
- A ban on harmful single-use plastics with clear phase-out deadlines.
- Strict controls and phase-outs for toxic chemical additives in plastics.
- Fair support for Global South countries through funding and technology transfer.
Why is this important?
We can end the Plastic Era.
Every year, 21 million tonnes of plastic waste—enough to fill shipping containers that, stacked end-to-end, could wrap around the Earth more than twice—leak into the environment, poisoning soils, oceans, and threatening biodiversity. Meanwhile, microplastics have even been found in the human brain, lungs, and even placentas and unborn babies, while toxic additives in plastics are linked to cancer, infertility, and hormonal disruption. [1]
In a chamber in Geneva, world leaders are locked into one of the most important decisions of our time: deciding on a legally binding treaty that could finally stop the endless flood of plastic destroying our planet. This would be the first to tackle the entire life cycle of plastics, from production to disposal, making it a potential game-changer for both the environment and human health. [2]
Yet halfway through, progress is stalled: The draft treaty is getting more and more stuffed with conflicting exceptions and loopholes, coming from 234 industry lobbyists who are working hard to weaken it. [3]
The EU can, and must, make a difference. Being one of the stronger parties in favour of a strong, ambitious Plastics Treaty, there is still time to push for real measures and lay the groundwork for a healthier, fairer, plastic pollution-free future. But they need to know that we have their backs and are counting on them to do the right thing.
Sign now and tell the EU: I will only settle for an ambitious Plastics Treaty!
