We won’t let climate-deniers rest

To the European Commissioner for Climate Wopke Hoekstra, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union
Petition
Don't back down from plans to cut European greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, in line with science.
Why is this important?

This summer’s extreme heat and floods show the climate crisis is no longer a warning. It’s a reality. [1] But far-right parties in the EU are turning climate action into a divisive issue: framing it as elitist and expensive in the short term. [2]
Just as the EU closed for summer, they took control of key negotiations on European climate targets – and they’re already trying to block plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 90 % by 2040. [3]
This target isn’t just a number: it's the bare minimum scientists say is needed to avoid total climate breakdown. Weakening it would lock in more floods, heatwaves, and crop failures for decades to come. [4]
The far-right are counting on summer silence. That people won’t notice. They’re wrong. Together with the Climate Action Network Europe, let’s build a massive public push to defend the 2040 target and stop far-right MEPs from dismantling it behind closed doors.
A huge petition will help us to pressure national governments and EU officials ahead of key decisions this autumn.
Our WeMove community has already helped push the EU to agree on an ambitious Green Deal, protect forests and define ecocide, the causing of severe environmental damage, as a crime. [5] Now we need our people power again to hold the line on this 90% target.
If enough of us raise our voices before MEPs return from the summer break, we can show there’s no mandate to gut climate policy - and kickstart a Europe-wide movement to force our leaders to defend the 2040 goal.
