Call on European supermarkets: Cut methane, cut meat!

To the Europe’s biggest retailers: Carrefour, Ahold Delhaize, Schwarz (Lidl), ALDI, Migros
Petition
- Commit to a methane reduction target of at least 30% by 2030
- Set a clear sales target of 60% plant-based and 40% animal-based proteins by 2030. By expanding the range of attractive plant-based products, you can cut emissions and support healthier diets.
- Disclose your emissions and sales of methane-emitting produce each year, including from meat and dairy.
Why is this important?
A new report has exposed how Europe’s biggest supermarkets are fuelling climate change through the produce they sell. Methane from meat and dairy is among the fastest-acting emissions heating our planet. [1] And yet, supermarkets are failing to act. Most have no targets to cut methane and hide the true cost to the planet of our shopping baskets.
Europe’s biggest supermarkets – like Carrefour, Lidl, ALDI, and Migros – have the power to transform the sustainability of our food systems. With their influence over food supply chains and what ends up on our plates, they are uniquely positioned to tackle methane from meat and dairy. [2]
We’ve already seen it can work. Dutch supermarket chain Albert Heijn has just become the first major supermarket to publicly disclose its methane emissions. [3] Transparency is the first step toward protecting our planet – and communities on the frontline of wildfires, floods and other climate disasters.
Together, let's urge Europe’s biggest supermarkets to cut methane emissions and report with full transparency!
