Healthy forests are our right!
To the European Commission, European Parliament and Council of the European Union
Petition
Scientists are warning we are almost out of time to save the global forests that remain. But there’s one law proposal that could turn this around: the European Union Deforestation Regulation.
Unfortunately, it has come under fierce attacks. Changes proposed by Member States and the European Parliament would open the door to greenwashing and destruction. What’s more, they’d lead to endless legal uncertainty and a downward spiral of postponements and further weakening of the law.
Delaying and gutting the approval of this new directive comes at a cost: Let it come into force to protect the world’s forests.
Why is this important?
Nature shouldn’t pay the price for industry. Every ruined forest, every polluted river. It's time to protect what’s ours.
There is a law that could hold to account big coffee, rubber, palm oil, and other industries accountable for destroying forests worldwide. This law is now under attack from Europe's leaders who want to put short term profits over forests.
But some European governments are trying to weaken the law. They’re putting short-term profits above forests - and our stable weather and bills.
We have a chance. The European Commission’s president, von der Leyen, can reject the watered-down deal which sacrifices more forests. She can stand behind her original proposal.
The Commission’s president cares about her reputation. A big mass of citizens’ support will give her the strength to reclaim control over her own proposal to save the forests - before she makes a move.
The people’s movement for forests has called on our community to urgently join them. Our demand to Ursula von der Leyen is to stand as a brave leader in defense of nature. The more support she gets from the people, the more chances a genuinely strong law will pass.
