Santa should wear European blue!

Why is this important?

Today’s geopolitical situation requires the European Union to step up. Citizens demand it: in the latest Eurobarometer, 89% of respondents asked Europe to be more united [1]. However, “unity” is easy to preach but hard to practice, because:

• There is no real “European” consciousness
• The EU is terrible at marketing itself

Christmas would offer a great opportunity for showing some paneuropean unity. You don’t need to rewatch, “A Christmas Carol” [2] to know that the idea of Christmas is compassion and caring for your next-of-kin. In other words: to stand together, for one another, to be united.

Santa wearing red has become a global marketing phenomenon since Coca-Cola pushed it from 1931 onwards [3]. But with the US becoming “scrooge” in Charles Dicken’s sense, I believe we can send a strong symbol for the European Union, if chocolate Santas would no longer wear a “maga-red” but have a “European blue and stars” wrapping this Christmas.

France was once scolded with“freedom fries” [4]. On Christmas, the EU can pull even with Santas in European blue that:

• Help build EU branding
• Reclaim part of the christmas narrative for Europe
• Allow you to participate with a sweet sign of protest

Help spread the word by signing and sharing the petition. The more, the “merrier” and the more likely we can convince chocolate manufacturers and retailers to support the idea.
