We, therefore, put forward this message in several points, for a European Union that must uncompromisingly assert the principles and values that set it apart:
● The European Union is a project strongly supported by its inhabitants, elected representatives, associations and intermediary bodies.
● The European Union is the guardian of solidarity, built on the Charter of Fundamental Rights, which must also be able to protect its values, its democratic space and peace through a strengthened defence policy.
● The European Union is a source of inspiration beyond its borders
● The European Union must confirm its closeness to its Territories and European citizens
● The European Union has the duty to assert its ambition for a peaceful world which is fairer and more sustainable, by supporting territories in their ecological, energy and digital transitions and by supporting the dynamics of territorial development in all its components (social equity, rural development, agriculture and food, crafts and industry, culture, etc.).
Why is this important?
As local players from local authorities, the ecological transition, local democracy, the social economy and popular education, we are calling for firm and committed support for a strong European Union that is closer to the regions.
The unprecedented context in which the European Union finds itself, under attack from all sides (internally and externally), is a consequence of a confused and bellicose international situation, where obscurantism is gaining ground. Unfortunately, this objective observation compels us. It demands that we send a strong message to all European citizens, who are deeply attached to the democratic, social and societal values and principles that underpin the European project, enshrined in 1957 in the Treaty of Rome, and which guarantee our future.
Our Europe, based on social, economic and territorial cohesion, can certainly be improved, although it is also precious, indispensable and protective. The European collective is our energy, cooperation is our strength, pooling asserts our responsible power, and sharing values consolidates this will.
By means of this press release, we are sending a strong, responsible and demanding message to our European authorities and elected representatives: The territories and local players make up the European Union, the territories and local players support the European Union, the territories and local players must be supported by the European Union!
