EU, don’t deport people to unsafe countries!
To the European Parliament
Petition
We are calling on MEPs to vote against the Safe Third Country file agreement which would strip people of a fair asylum process and allow forced deportations to unsafe countries.
Why is this important?
The EU wants to copy the most dangerous refugee rule.
Australia’s new asylum system has just swallowed its first person - deported to notorious Nauru island, cut off from the world, with their safety at serious risk. [1] This is what “safe third country” policies really do.
Now the EU wants to copy it. If we don’t act now, the next victims could be people seeking safety in Europe.
In a week, our MEPs will vote on new EU asylum rules that would allow governments to reject people without a fair hearing and send them to so-called “safe” countries they may have never even set foot in. This vote is coming fast - and we know it will be tight.
If passed, these rules would shred refugee protection. People fleeing danger could be denied individual assessment, simply because they come from a country the EU labels as “safe”. It legalises forced deportations to countries where refugees have never been and are not protected. The EU is twisting “safety”, putting lives at risk while security companies profit.
This is not a done deal… yet.
Right now, MEPs are deciding how they will vote - and pressure from constituents does move them. If enough of us speak out, especially in the final days before a vote, politicians will listen.
Help block this law and protect the right of people fleeing war to seek safety in Europe!
