Don’t let profiteering turn our tap water toxic
To the European Commission and to Member States
Petition
More than 30% of EU surface waters and over 80% of marine waters are already eutrophic, while 14% of groundwater breaches drinking water limits.
We call on EU leaders to:
- Immediately reverse the decision to loosen manure application rules
- Enforce and strengthen the Nitrates Directive
- Support farmers to transition to reduce animal stocking densities and to shift to low-input, agroecological farming.
Europe’s water is for people - it’s not a dumping ground.
Why is this important?
Every sip you take could be contaminated.
Toxic waste from industrial farming is leaking, drop by drop, into our water. Manure and sprayed chemicals travel through soil into rivers - and they end up in our glasses. [1]
The result: ‘blue babies’, cancer, cardiovascular diseases. [2]
For years industrial farming lobbyists sat beside Commissioners, putting pressure on them to protect profits, instead of people.
Now, corporations have attacked again, making standards lower - letting more manure and chemicals into our drinking water.
This is an attack on our water and our health. One citizens group has launched a legal investigation to challenge this decision. [3] But, unless we use people’s power to show our support, it could go unheard.
That’s precisely why you and I are part of this community: our voices can surface this important issue from the shadows.
Legal action is just the start. In the past, our community filed a complaint on violations of migrant’s rights, backed it with public pressure - and won! [4]
The window to protect our drinking water is closing fast. If enough of us join, we’ll stand up to the corporations to blame. Are you in?
