Protect people, not corporate bullies
To all governments of the European Union
Petition
We call on European governments to urgently and fully transpose the EU Anti-SLAPP Directive into strong national laws that actually protect people:
- Guarantee full legal protection of people who engage in public participation against all SLAPPs, whether or not they are cross-border, and regardless of the legal basis (criminal, civil or administrative).
- Ensure fast dismissal of abusive cases, legal aid and financial compensation for victims, and real penalties for those who abuse the courts
Why is this important?
Greenpeace just went to court in the Netherlands. Their crime? Trying to stop a massive gas pipeline from destroying nature. [1]
And now, they’re being sued for millions by the very fossil fuel giant they fought. This is not an isolated case. [2]
Thankfully the EU already has a law that protects us. [3] Lawsuits where corporations armed with deep pockets and ruthless corporate lawyers take everyday people to court for stopping bad stuff from happening.
But until our leaders implement the law people are defenceless against Big Bullies. And our governments are dragging their feet. [4] Some don’t want to implement the law. Others are happy to do it sloppily and avoid confronting the corporations that fund them.
Because this is about all our freedoms and right to speak up: to speak truth to those in power.
Sign now to avoid governments stall this protection. If enough of us speak up today, they can’t quietly delay or dilute this law.
Tell them: Shield civil society from corporate bullies!
