Run EU data centres on 100% renewables!
To the European Commission, European Parliament and Council of the European Union
Petition
We demand that:
- All new data centres in Europe must meet their energy demand with 100% new, local and additional renewable energy
- Companies must be made to be transparent on energy demand projections, real energy use and emissions per site for planned and existing data centres
- No new data centres in Europe until they are made compatible with Europe’s energy transition and climate goals
Why is this important?
Thousands of enormous, energy-hungry data centres, forcing up electricity prices for all of us. That’s what risks happening unless we demand an alternative.
Data centres use huge amounts of energy. In Ireland alone, they already consume 20% of the country’s electricity. [1] Now, driven by skyrocketing AI use, Big Tech wants to build thousands more in Europe. [2]
New data centres in Europe should only be built if they can be powered by renewable energy. We could fight climate change and bring down bills for everyone by making Big Tech invest in wind and solar.
Decisions are being made in Brussels right now on how to make sure data centres are energy efficient. These decisions will have real impacts on our bills, our lives, and our local communities.
Our planet should be the priority, not AI company profits. We need decisionmakers to be bolder and require all data centres to run on 100% new, renewable energy.
They need to know that people across Europe are behind them. Sign the petition now to tell the EU: Data centres must be powered by 100% new renewable energy.
