Investigate FIFA’s leader Gianni Infantino
To the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) Ethics Committee
Petition
The recent removal of a player’s red card after pressure from US President Donald Trump is unacceptable. This is just one of many instances of the head of FIFA - Gianni Infantino - breaking the association’s own rules around political impartiality. Football must remain fair and equal for all teams.
We call on you to urgently investigate Gianni Infantino’s multiple breaches of article 15 of the FIFA Code of Ethics, which says FIFA officials must remain “politically neutral”.
Why is this important?
A US player receives a red card in the World Cup. Donald Trump makes a phone call. The red card disappears. [1]
Football - the sport millions of us love - is under threat. FIFA is the global organisation that is supposed to make sure football is fair. It should not favour any country or politician - it’s written in its own rules. [2]
But as the World Cup is taking place, its leader, Gianni Infantino, is openly and shamelessly cosying up to Trump.
He removes inconvenient red cards against the US. He praises Trump to the media. He even created a made-up FIFA peace prize just to feed his ego. [3]
But after the red card incident, FIFA and its leader are under enormous pressure. [4]
Now there are calls for an investigation into Infantino’s actions, backed by 50 MEPs and the Norwegian football federation. [5] Mass public pressure right now - as the World Cup is in the news - could help tip the scale.
Add your name to the request for an urgent investigation - we’ll send all signatures to FIFA.
