EU: Don’t increase bonuses for bankers!
To the EU Commission, the EU Parliament and the member states of the EU
Petition
We call on you to protect people over profits, and ensure EU banking regulation is strong enough to withstand another financial crisis like the one in 2008. Avoid following the US’ lead in cutting crucial rules that protect our financial system and don’t remove caps on bankers’ bonuses.
Why is this important?
Food prices are going up. Bills are going up. Our wages stay the same. All while billionaires and multi-millionaires get wealthier.
And what is the EU doing? Making it easier for bankers to get bigger bonuses.
The Trump administration is making a “bonfire” of banking rules in the US, and now there are signs Europe wants to copy them. [1] In a major review of banking rules, the EU is considering removing a bonus limit for bankers.
The limit is there to stop dangerous risk-taking in the financial sector. [2] To stop bankers profiting recklessly, then letting us pick up the pieces when it all goes wrong.
It was put in place after the 2008 financial crisis, when profit-hungry banks had to be bailed out by the state - with people like you and me paying the price.
For now, the new rules are a threat, but just a draft. This means there’s still time for us to push back, and force the EU to prioritise people over helping the rich get even richer. [3]
Sign the petition to tell the EU: Don’t push us into another financial crisis, don’t remove caps on bankers’ bonuses!
