Spain, stop Europe's deportation law!
To the Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez
Petition
We’re calling on the Spanish government to use their power to ask the Court of Justice of the European Union to stop the EU's new deportation law from putting fundamental rights at risk. Don't let Europe create a future of immigration raids, family separation and deportations to countries people have never even set foot in.
Why is this important?
After voting for the EU's new deportation law, some politicians celebrated by chanting "Send them back." [1]
They thought the fight was over. But they celebrated too soon.
National governments still have a chance to stop the most dangerous parts of this law before they become Europe's new normal. Over the next few weeks, they can ask Europe's highest court to step in and decide whether the law violates people's fundamental rights. After that, the door closes.
This law could push Europe towards its own ICE-style deportation system: raids on people's homes, families torn apart, people being deported to countries they have never even set foot in. [2]
If any government is likely to act, it's Spain. It has repeatedly raised concerns about the direction Europe is taking on migration and argued for a different approach.
But Spain won't take this step without public backing.
If thousands of us speak up together now, we can show the Spanish government that people across Europe expect it to defend human rights before the deadline runs out.
