AI should serve us, not tech billionaires!

We call on you to strengthen the rules protecting our data, and to lead efforts towards a temporary pause on the development of dangerous AI systems, until the companies building them can prove to independent evaluators that they are safe. AI systems should not threaten our livelihoods and safety.
We specifically call on you to:
- Make companies prove their most powerful AI systems are safe-by-design before they can build or release them.
- Stop the development of AI systems that show dangerous capabilities until their safety can be guaranteed.
- Force AI companies to be transparent about how their systems are built and tested, and be held legally responsible for the harm those systems cause.
- Keep humans in control of AI. AI should not be allowed to make important decisions or take dangerous actions on its own.
- AI as a common good: ensure transformative AI technology is co-developed for human flourishing (i.e. ecological/social good, mental welfare) rather than for investor profit.
- Lead the international efforts towards the creation of a global oversight committee, working on a temporary pause on the most powerful AI until a global treaty is drafted.
Why is this important?
Meta’s AI hacked a real company.
And it’s not an isolated incident. It’s the third time in just a few weeks that an AI system has gone rogue, operating beyond human control. [1]
AI systems are no longer just answering questions or writing emails. They can pretend to be real people, steal information, help put innocent people in handcuffs - and take action on their own. [2]
And a handful of tech billionaires are racing to make AI even more powerful - faster than our rules can keep up. Nobody is checking their work before these systems go out into the world. They rake in billions, we live with the consequences.
Even the people building the AI think it’s too dangerous and have called for governments to slow the AI race down. [3] If the people who know this technology inside out are asking for a break, we should make sure politicians listen.
