Don’t let smart glasses secretly record us
To the European Commission, European Parliament, and EU governments
Petition
Smart glasses, like Meta’s, can secretly record people without their consent, posing a serious threat to our privacy.
We call on you to:
- Strengthen EU rules to ensure smart glasses cannot record people without their knowledge and consent.
- Require all smart glasses sold in the EU to meet strong privacy and data protection standards, with effective safeguards against covert recording.
- Act now to protect people’s privacy before camera-equipped smart glasses become commonplace.
Why is this important?
Toluwa thought she was having an ordinary conversation with a stranger.
She had no idea he was wearing Meta smart glasses - or that the glasses were recording her.
She only found out when friends started sending her the video. It had been posted online and viewed more than 200,000 times. [1]
Toluwa had never agreed to be filmed. She had no chance to say no.
It could happen to any of us - on the street, in a café, at work or on our daily commute.
Just this week, Norway announced plans to tighten the rules around smart glasses. And Poland’s data protection authority has warned that smart glasses pose serious risks to our privacy. [2]
European countries are starting to act. Now the EU needs to step up.
We can push for rules that make sure smart glasses cannot secretly record us without our consent - and cannot be sold in Europe unless they protect our privacy.
Will you join us in calling on the EU to protect our privacy before secret recording becomes our everyday reality?
