People shouldn’t pay for climate disasters
To the European Commission, European Parliament and Council of the European Union
Petition
We call on the EU to:
- Introduce a public-private EU reinsurance scheme to ensure wide insurance coverage before natural disasters hit
- Create an EU disaster fund that functions as a public safety net, to reduce the burden on national budgets after climate catastrophes
- Require governments and insurers to have credible climate transition and adaptation plans if they want to access EU-level support
Why is this important?
Your home could burn down, and your insurance company might refuse to pay for it.
As wildfires and other disasters become more common and more devastating, insurance companies are making insurance more expensive – or removing it altogether. [1]
But people who lose their homes shouldn't also lose their savings.
The good news is that later this year, the EU will present proposals to tackle this problem. But right now, they’re hearing a lot from insurance companies, who want to dodge responsibility. They haven’t heard from the public.
When disasters become too big for insurance companies to handle, a public system should step in, so the cost is shared and people in Europe aren’t left to scrape money together. [2]
If the proposal writers feel the pressure from people, we can convince them to make sure no-one pays the price of disasters alone. Insurers pockets’ shouldn’t benefit from catastrophes.
Sign now to tell the EU: Create a disaster fund that doesn’t leave anyone behind!
