EU: Protect us from another financial crisis, don’t deregulate banks!
To the Commissioner for Financial Services and the Savings and Investments Union Maria Luís Albuquerque, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament
Petition
We call on you to protect people over profits, and ensure EU banking regulation is strong enough for banks to withstand another financial crisis like the one in 2008. Do not engage in an international race to the bottom and don’t cut crucial rules that protect our financial system and keep banks in check.
We especially ask you to refrain from:
- easing capital requirements for banks
- removing caps on bonuses for bankers
- shifting banking supervision focus from protecting financial stability and consumers to competitiveness
Why is this important?
You probably still remember the fear and worry when the financial crisis hit in 2008. Millions of people were losing their jobs and their homes.
After the crisis, the EU took action and introduced stronger rules to keep banks in check. [1] But now – terrifyingly – those rules are at risk. [2]
The Trump administration is making a "bonfire" of banking rules in the US, and there are signs the EU wants to follow suit. [3]
The EU is about to carry out a major review of banking rules and many fear it will give banks too much freedom. It could reduce the funds banks need to keep to cover unexpected losses, and remove caps on bankers’ bonuses. [4]
If it’s allowed to go ahead, it could lead to another 2008-style crisis. Where profit-hungry banks need to be bailed out by the state and people like you and me have to pay the price.
Right now, the new rules are a draft. This means there’s still time for us to push back, and make sure we are kept safe from another financial crisis. [5]
Sign the petition to tell the EU: Don’t push us into another financial crisis, don’t deregulate banks!
