Save the mackerel!
To the major supermarket chains of UK & Europe
Petition
We call on you to:
- Immediately stop all sales of mackerel until stocks have recovered.
- Call on national governments and the EU to take urgent action to address the overfishing of mackerel in line with scientific advice.
Why is this important?
Waitrose - one of the UK’s largest supermarket chains - just announced they’re completely stopping sales of mackerel to try to force an end to dangerous overfishing.
This kind of thing has never happened before. But because of their size, major supermarket chains have a lot of leverage over the government and can get enormous media attention when they act. [1]
For a long time, mackerel was the sustainable choice of fish to eat. But now, due to out-of-control overfishing, catches exceed scientifically recommended levels by almost 200,000 tonnes - and the fish is under dire threat. [2]
If more supermarkets agree to temporarily stop selling mackerel, this fish could be saved for future generations.
Most of us shop in chain supermarkets. They are sensitive to public outrage and want to look good in the press. If tens of thousands of us - their customers - call them out, they will have to listen. Their decisions will force politicians to act to protect the future of the mackerel.
We are running out of time to save the mackerel for future generations. Sign the petition to tell the major supermarket chains of UK and Europe: Stop stocking mackerel until overfishing is tackled!
