Protect Our Food From Toxic Pesticides
To the European Commission, European Parliament and Council of the European Union
Petition
Our European food safety is at risk. The new Omnibus regulation on Food and Feed would allow toxic pesticides to be approved, without ever having to prove they are safe.
We call on you to:
- Reject any plan or proposal that would allow unlimited, permanent, or untested approvals of chemical pesticides.
- Strengthen - and not weaken - the requirement that companies must prove their chemicals and pesticides are safe, based on independent scientific assessment.
- Defend the precautionary principle as a cornerstone of EU health and environmental protection.
- Close existing regulatory loopholes and set Europe on a clear path toward reducing and ultimately phasing out the use of toxic pesticides, as millions of Europeans have already demanded through the Save Bees and Farmers ECI and repeated EU-wide opinion polls.
The EU must put the health of people, pollinators, and the environment above the interests of Bayer-Monsanto and other pesticide giants.
Why is this important?
Bayer-Monsanto and pesticide giants are closer than ever to getting what they’ve always dreamed of: toxic pesticides approved forever, without ever having to prove they are safe.
Right now, Europe has the safest rules in the world to protect us from pesticides. If a company wants to sell a pesticide, they have to prove it’s safe. And they must re-prove it every few years to keep it on the market.
But before the end of the year, the EU plans to push through new rules that would remove our food safety system.
For a decade, we’ve been fighting to keep glyphosate and pesticides off our plates. Now the EU could undo it all, letting these toxic chemicals into our food forever.
Greedy companies like Bayer-Monsanto and others are pushing hard for exactly this outcome. Unless we act fast, they will win.
We learned about this plan before the Commission made it public, and that gives us a rare chance. [1] If we show a massive public backlash before the proposal is even published, they will think twice about putting it forward at all.
Together, we can stop this disaster before it poisons our future, and our children’s future, forever.
