Petition
We demand:
• Marc García-Durán Huet’s immediate abandonment of the Underwater Garden project.
• A public commitment from the Cabildo of Tenerife to not support massive tourism infrastructures disguised as sustainability.
• The prioritisation of real marine conservation measures and the expansion of marine reserves instead of tourism megaprojects.
Why is this important?
Presented as a “regenerative” space with underwater gardens and high-end entertainment activities, Underwater Garden is in fact a speculative megaproject in a protected area that will endanger the ecosystem, restrict free access to the sea, and negatively impact the lifestyle of the local community.
Why we say NO:
- It is not regenerative: it is a luxury theme park that will bring speculation, overcrowding, and destruction.
- Severe environmental impact: it will alter marine and coastal ecosystems, increase boat traffic, and affect vulnerable species.
- It excludes the community: it effectively privatizes a space that has always been freely used by locals.
- A threat to a unique wave: its infrastructure could change currents and ruin an iconic wave for surfers and biodiversity.
- Gentrification: it will raise housing prices and displace the local population.
- Lack of transparency: the promoter hides key information and greenwashes the project.
- Dangerous precedent: it would open the door to more destructive megaprojects we’ve been fighting for years, like the now-forgotten Fonsalía port.
Instead of further destroying the coast and local lifestyle, there are sustainable and respectful alternatives for nature and island culture:
- Protect the coast and seabed: expand reserves like the Special Conservation Zone (ZEC) Teno-Rasca and effectively protect existing ones.
- Regenerate degraded coastal areas: restore natural spaces and conserve biodiversity without turning nature into a business.
- Promote dignified local economies: support the primary sector and the blue economy, creating real jobs for the local population.
Tenerife doesn’t need more theme parks and greenwashing projects—it needs to protect its natural wealth.
Sign and join us to stop Underwater Garden! The island belongs to its people, not to multinationals.
