Hold Amazon accountable: Protect workers’ rights!
To the European Data Protection Authorities, the European Data Protection Board, the European Commission and the European Parliament.
Petition
We call on the European Data Protection Authorities, the European Data Protection Board, the European Commission and the European Parliament to:
- Immediately stop Amazon's abusive use of workers' personal data. Demand a thorough investigation into the use of surveillance and tracking technologies that violate the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
- Impose meaningful sanctions for practices that violate privacy and human dignity. Data protection authorities should follow the example of France and Luxembourg by fining Amazon for its systematic violations.
- Ensure that Amazon respects the fundamental rights of workers. Control practices and work rhythms must be aligned with European standards on health, safety and dignity.
Why is this important?
Amazon may seem like Santa Claus, delivering parcels at record speed and making gifts appear under the tree as if by magic. But behind this festive illusion lies a stark reality.
Every Amazon package is powered by a business that ruthlessly exploits workers pushing them to their limits to sell more and make extra profits. Monitored by cameras and GPS, people working for Amazon endure gruelling shifts throughout the night and into the day, with no breaks and their bosses breathing down their necks.
Countries such as France and Luxembourg have imposed multimillion-dollar fines on Amazon for violating workers' rights and privacy. [1] And in a historic move, the European Parliament expelled Amazon lobbyists after they refused to address working conditions in their warehouses or allow inspections of their facilities.
Change is underway, but the fight is far from over. [2]
Workers are taking to the streets to end their exploitation, but they can’t win this battle alone. As citizens and consumers, we can amplify their voices and transform their struggle into a movement too powerful to ignore. And force the European leaders and data protection authorities to hold Amazon accountable for exploiting workers across Europe.
Join us now to ensure Amazon respects the rights and dignity of every worker.
