No more “green” lies! Don’t let the EU kill the anti-greenwashing law.

To European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the European Parliament and Member States
Petition
Protect the environment and stop corporate greenwashing! Don’t scrap the EU Green Claims Directive. Pass the law to:
- Independently verify the environmental claims that companies make
- Set clear rules to ensure companies make accurate claims
- Prevent misleading product claims of climate neutrality and carbon offsetting – that companies make to avoid reducing their emissions
- Include strict sanctions for non-compliance.
Why is this important?
Have you ever paid more for an “eco-friendly” t-shirt, chocolate or coffee?
You might have been scammed. More than half of all green claims that companies put on products in Europe are vague, exaggerated, or just plain false. [1]
A new European law was supposed to stop this greenwashing. [2] It would have forced companies to prove their environmental claims — with independent checks and real penalties for lying.
But two weeks ago, just before the final round of talks, the European Commission suddenly pulled the plug on this law — after pressure from conservative and far-right politicians who want to destroy all the environmental laws we fought hard for. [3]
Here’s the truth:
- The Commission’s withdrawal may actually be illegal, as there is clear evidence of submitting to blackmail rather than acting in citizens’ best interest. [4]
- EU political groups from the Greens to the centrists are outraged — and some are even considering legal action. [5]
- Even within the Commission, the top climate official tried to stop the move, calling it undemocratic and dangerous for climate progress. [6] This internal split gives us a unique chance to push back!
Finally voices within the EU institutions are standing with us to demand an end to the dismantling of Europe's green policies. We can stop this law from facing the same fate of other green decisions, [7] and further dragging us back into the fossil age.
If thousands of citizens add their voices to this outrage, while the European Commission is divided, our leaders will not be able to quietly kill the law. Let’s force them to restart the talks and pass a law that holds companies accountable for scam green promises.
