Lidl: Free chickens from torture!
Joel Rampoldt, Lidl CEO
Petition
We call on Lidl to eliminate the unnecessary suffering of broiler chickens in its supply chain by signing and committing to the standards of the European Chicken Commitment.
Why is this important?
Animal welfare is integral to the sustainability of the food system. The cruel and unsustainable conditions in which we find animals such as broiler chickens [1] reflect the disinterest that supermarkets such as Lidl have shown for years in adapting to minimum animal welfare requirements.
The biggest European grocer [2], the brand that could change the paradigm for animals, has decided to perpetuate animal suffering. Lidl could make a difference, but it prefers to continue turning over millions of euros stained with pain and anguish, not only going against all ethics but also endangering its consumers.
What do we mean by that?
A high density of broiler chicken:
Science states that disproportionate density leads to an increased risk of virulent outbreaks with the potential for human contagion.
Breeding of fast-growing breeds:
Rapid growth leads to so-called ‘production’ diseases, such as ascites, sudden death syndrome or contact dermatitis.
Failure to meet minimum environmental enrichment standards:
Lack of environmental stimuli prevents the development of their natural behaviours, such as walking, running or burrowing.
Stunning by electrical bathing:
Birds are immersed in electrified water as a method of stunning prior to slaughter. The European Commission points out that a ban on this process is necessary due to the animal suffering involved.
The European Chicken Commitment [3] is more than a list of minimum requirements for chicken welfare. It is the opportunity for the poultry farming sector to get their act together and step up to the demands of a constantly evolving market that is increasingly aware of the cruel conditions broiler chickens are subjected to.
Call on Lidl to eliminate unnecessary animal suffering in its supply chain.
