Write a letter and send your bills to your minister
Take pen to paper and write a personal letter to your finance minister. Call on them to rise to this historic moment and get EU countries to agree to new taxes to make polluters pay. The revenues must support communities affected by the climate crisis.
How to do it?
- Write a letter to the REPLACEME/Spanish/German/French/Dutch/Italian/Polish Finance Minister and attach your energy bills to the letter! You can even write it on the back of your bill. Remove any fragile data you don’t want to share from your bills, for instance by covering this with a black marker. If you only have a digital bill, print this or a screenshot. We need to show our representatives that we are done with making personal sacrifices to pay our bills, while polluters gain record profits.
- Put your letter and bills in an envelope addressed to REPLACEME
- Go to the post office or mailbox. Take a photo of yourself sending the letter. Or just a photo of your letter/ envelope if you don’t want to show your face.
- Share the photo on your social media for extra impact. Tag your minister and us!

Not sure what to write in your letter? Here is some additional information you can use:
- It’s people, not polluters who pay the ultimate price for the climate crisis. Europeans are losing their homes to raging fires and flooding. It’s time for polluters to take responsibility for the climate crisis.
- We demand new taxes on fossil fuels companies and the transport sector to fund climate finance for communities suffering due to the climate crisis.
- Your finance minister has the power to make sure these polluters pay.

France has already introduced interesting taxation rules to finance development aid. This is the perfect time to call on the French Finance Minister to continue on this path and commit to a tax on oil, gas and coal companies - and to encourage other political leaders to do the same! Revenues from this should go to the loss and damage fund and to support the just transition in France.
- PL
Poland has taken the first step towards making coal and mining companies pay a tax on excess profits. This proposal needs to be enacted in full. This is the perfect time to call on the Polish Finance Minister to build on this national approach and embrace European opportunities to raise revenue from big polluters. - ES
Spain holds the Presidency of the European Council right now. [Insert name of finance minister] needs to hear from you about what to push the EU on! Now is the time to push for strong action from Spain in the EU on progressive wealth taxes, extending windfall taxes on fossil fuel companies' profits, and levies on aviation. - IT
Italy is starting to make big polluters pay: specifically fossil fuels companies and the banking sector. The money collected needs to go to climate finance and to support communities fighting climate change. Italy can build on this and make sure the EU takes a common approach to make big polluters pay.

Germany has a high historical responsibility for the climate crisis. Our country will also play a key role in determining the approach of the EU at the major global climate meeting in December. It's time for our government to support stronger action to make big polluters pay and compensate communities for climate damages.
